And You Call Yourself a Film Buff?! – INDEPENDENCE DAY

With the Fourth of July on the horizon, I felt that this was a perfect time to finally see a movie I have heard so much about. To be honest, I am not sure why this movie has escaped me for so long. I remember it growing up, but I guess I never really had the opportunity to watch it. I simply can’t think of a better way to celebrate America’s independence other than watching a movie about earth’s independence — from aliens.

Independence Day follows three characters on their mission to save Earth and civilization from being wiped out by extraterrestrials. The film follows President Thomas J. Whitmore (Bill Pullman), fighter pilot Captain Steve Hiller (Will Smith), and scientist David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) as they do their part in stopping the invasion. All of these storylines seem independent through the film, but end up connecting in a huge way.

This movie literally has everything from love stories, to massive explosions to spectacular air battles with the alien spaceships and fighter jets. Naturally, Will Smith stole the show with comedy, like when he and Goldblum infiltrate the alien spaceship, but he also showed his tough side repeatedly, beginning when he punched an alien in the face and said that oh-so famous line, “Welcome to Earth.” This was Smith’s first movie in the science fiction genre and, as we all know, it would not be his last.

Something that really stood out to me was the special effects. A lot of things get blown up in this movie, even the White House. The explosions themselves, and even the walls of fire that came after the leveling of entire cities, looked pretty impressive but, most of all, real. In fact I think the explosions and the alien ships themselves looked more realistic than most movies from today’s cinema. The special effects were so good in fact that Independence Day took home an Oscar for visual effects in 1996. Of course, the alien ships looked their best when they’re flying circles around the fighter jets. The air battles between the fighter jets and the alien spaceships, also known as dogfights, were easily some of the more intense scenes the film had to offer.

I have to say though, that the aliens looked pretty interesting. The protective suits that the aliens wore were unique and new. I’ve seen tons of alien movies but don’t think I have ever really seen an alien that dons full body armor. “Predator” wore a helmet but that’s about it — nothing is as intense as this! Wearing the protective suits showed that the aliens were just as fragile as the humans.

In this movie, the aliens are not only very fragile, but also very smart. The fact that they didn’t just come into our atmosphere and start blowing people away showed how intelligent the species was. The aliens had a very specific plan of attack—move to the major cities and destroy them because they where the most populated and the nuclei of power and order.

What also made this movie different was the fact that the aliens attacked every country, and not just America. So, in essence, the whole world was fighting against the invasion. This was something I had never really seen before. Usually in alien movies only one area is really being attacked and more often then not that place is somewhere in America. I thought it was really cool that Independence Day showed the aliens attacking every major country as well as different armies — fighting against the aliens. But of course it was the Americans who ended up saving the world.

If you’re looking for a good movie to top off your Independence Day, look no further than Independence Day. This movie has something for everyone in the realms of romance, action, and science fiction. It will have you on the edge of your seat in the beginning and have you jumping out of it cheering at the end. Independence Day is definitely a memorable, action-packed alien film that everyone should see this Thursday.
