Late this fall, PFS will be embarking on its newest chapter of film programming with the Philadelphia International Children’s Film Festival (Save the Dates:  November 15 – 17, 2013).   What better way to do some field research than visit Universal Pictures’ ‘Despicablimp’ as it soars through the skies of Philadelphia promoting  Despicable Me 2!

It’s not that I avoided watching Chinatown, as I have with other ‘Film Buff’ fodder like Lawrence of Arabia or Doctor Zhivago. I just never got around to it, but last week, I finally bit the bullet. I didn’t really know what to expect — some people had told me it was awesome; others had said it was good, but disturbing. So, I pressed play apprehensively. As it turns out, that was the perfect attitude, as I remained impressed and nervous for the next 130 minutes.

The inaugural 4-day film festival, held from April 26-29, 2012, concludes with great success! Events took place at the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, Theater of the Living Arts (TLA) and World Cafe Live. Approximately 2,300 tickets sold to 26 Screenings of 19 rockumentaries, musician biopics, and films that are defined by great soundtracks.

The latest from the brother duo, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, The Kid With a Bike, vividly depicts the struggles of growing up a lower class Belgian from the vantage point of the young protagonist, Cyril. Cyril (Thomas Doret) is a hostile and unruly 11-year-old orphan determined to set off on a mission to find both his deadbeat dad and his bicycle. Along his journey, Cyril meets an empathetic hairdresser, Samantha (Cécile De France) who decides to care after him.

The 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards took place last night and this year it was the 20th Philadelphia Film Festival that came out a big winner in terms of programming some of the most notable films of 2011.

The milestone Anniversary year featured 147 films, including 122 narratives and documentaries hailing from 34 countries.
Among the genres and categories covered were New French, Spanish Language, Sports in Motion, World Narratives, American Independents, Greater Filmadelphia – a series which showcased films with a local connection – and many more.
