PFS Member Sneak Preview: Salmon Fishing in the Yemen

It was a lark. Attractive people-- exotic places-- moral dilemma-- visionary Sheik-- dull marriage-- bad boss-- overcoming obstacles and then, voila, miracles--.

The movie was just what the big shot female character who worked for the government (Kristen Scott Thomas) was trying to accomplish in the movie-- a feel-good somethin' somethin' in tough times.

It could have been worse-- it could have been the Reese Witherspoon and the guy with the distracting tooth (Tom Hardy?) movie.

Using a bazaar shared goal, (bringing salmon to the desert) as a spine for an otherwise dull boy meets girl- looses girl -gets girl plot line, I thought that Salmon Fishing in Yemen was lightly amusing dribble peppered with a few funny lines. On the whole, it left me wishing it had been stocked with deeper plot lines and a more engaging set of characters, instead of salmon. It was not a bad movie, but too much of it seemed contrived. Judging from the boisterous guffaws emanating almost non-stop from the folks seated directly behind me, often coming during moments of the film where there was nothing the least bit clever or humorous, I wondered if someone had surgically removed my sense of humor, or if they were planted there by CBS films to make the movie seem more like the romantic comedy that it was not. If you take away the "salmon in the dessert" device, the film has nothing to offer. The introduction of an assassination plot was an empty and contrived attempt to make a dull film less dull. But the film was certainly a feel good movie, and fun to watch thanks in no small part to Emily Blunt's performance and absolute cuteness.

Salmon fishing in the Yemen is the best story I have read in recent year. It has all kinds of features that a good story needs. There is not a single part that will make the reader bored. A good work done by the author. go here

Last night PFS offered its members a sneak preview of Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, an international story of love, war, faith and fishing. An Arab Sheik from the country of Yemen (Amr Waked) strongly desires to bring the sport of salmon fishing to the desert. Harriet Chetwode-Talbot (Emily Blunt) is the account executive of a British company which represents the business interests of the Shiek, and is given the task of finding a fishing expert/scientist, Dr. Fred Jones (Ewan McGregor) to head up the Sheik's project. Also in the mix is an aggressive press secretary for the Prime Minister (Kristen Scott Thomas); Dr Jones' absentee wife; Chetwode-Talbot's missing in action boyfriend; and an array of obstacles that has everyone involved in the Yemen Salmon project swimming upstream.
