On Monday, PFS Members got a special sneak peek at racing documentary Senna. The film, directed by Asif Kapadia, chronicles the career of Aryton Senna, arguably the best driver in Formula One history. This film is sure to attract racing enthusiasts and novices alike. Brad Schreiber reviewed the film for the Huffington Post, saying that "its complexity, irony and heart put it in a special class of film."

On Thursday, PFS interns Brittany and Alex went to a screening of Warrior, which comes out in theaters September 9. Mark your calendars!

Brittany Says...
Don’t let the Mixed Marital Arts theme of Warrior fool you into thinking its just another sports story. This film is more about family struggle than MMA, thanks to fantastic performances from the three leads, Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton and Nick Nolte. The beginning of the movie was nothing special but it set the stage for the intense final scenes. I can’t remember ever being so invested in a final battle.

On Tuesday, PFS Members got a sneak preview of 50/50, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anjelica Huston, Anna Kendrick, and Bryce Dallas Howard. In case you missed the show, the staff of the Philadelphia Film Society wrote some quick reviews of the film.

In 50/50 Joseph Gordon-Levitt does an admirable job playing a young man recently diagnosed with cancer, but the ensemble cast didn’t hold up their end of the bargain.

We all know the name Saddam Hussein. The name reminds my generation of a conflict that has engulfed much of the world for almost half of our lives. For others, it brings back memories of not only this war but also another in the early 90s. Much less known is the name Uday Hussein, Saddam’s eldest son. However, some say that Uday was just as dangerous, a veritable psychopath who played with anyone he chose. Uday became notorious for brutally punishing his friends, girlfriends, and even athletes who failed to perform.

Saturday, July 16th PFS went to the annual Bastille Day Celebration at Eastern State Penitentiary to promote our upcoming 12 Monkeys screening held at the Penitentiary on the following Wednesday. We gave out a ton of free movie schwag, made some new friends and took in the Parisian atmosphere.

Philadelphia Film Society Managing Director, Parinda Patel, attended a press junket with actor-turned-director Michael Rapaport, in anticipation of his latest documentary film project, Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest. Rapaport spoke about how his life-long love of hip hop (and Tribe in particular) prompted him to make this film. He also speaks of his now very public relationship with the group, which took a tumultuous downturn ealier this year when the film hit the Sundance Film Festival.
