The horror/comedy film "The Cabin in the Woods" currently has an 89% "fresh" rating on movie website rottentomatoes.com. Not bad for a movie that took three years to be released following its completion.

Last night PFS presented a sneak preview of the much talked about documentary Bully. Some PFS members may recall this documentary by filmmaker Lee Hirsch was screened last October during the 20th Philadelphia Film Festival when it was titled The Bully Project. I think the shortened title really gives it the impact the film deserves.

A new Food Network produced documentary, HUNGER HITS HOME, narrated by Oscar®-winning actor and longtime anti-hunger activist Jeff Bridges focuses on the devastating hidden crisis of childhood hunger in America. The film is part of an ongoing partnership between Food Network and Share our Strength, whose No Kid Hungry initiative aims to eradicate child hunger in America by 2015 by surrounding children with nutritious food where they live, learn and play. Last week Philadelphia welcomed Academy Award winning actress Eva Marie Saint to the Prince Music Theater where she accompanied a special presentation of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic NORTH BY NORTHWEST.

Part of TCM’s “Road to Hollywood” series, 400+ movie lovers, including numerous PFS members, packed the Prince for the free event (200 patrons were turned away from the first-come, first-served screening).

TCM host Ben Mankiewicz facilitated the pre-screening Q&A with Ms.

PFS recently hosted a Member Special Event screening at the Tower Theater, featuring a new documentary entitled Dark Girls.

Dark Girls is co-directed and produced by Bill Duke (Duke Media) and D. Channsin Berry (Urban Winter Entertainment) the film explores the deep-seated bias and attitudes about skin color; particularly dark skinned women, outside of and within the Black American culture.

Just got back from Berlin where the Berlinale and the European Film Market were taking place. It was the first PFS work outing for our new Associate Programmer, Dilcia Barrera, who’s background at Sundance, AFI Fest and Outfest have us all excited about having her on our team. She was covering the Forum and Panorama sections for us while I sifted through the competition and the market looking for the perfect picks for Philly.

It was a big year for searing family dramas.
