Pretentious Film Majors

Interview: Adam Leon, Director of ‘Gimme The Loot’

Another Official Selection of the 21st Annual Philadelphia Film Festival has made it's way back to the Philadelphia Silver Screens. Adam Leon's‘Gimme The Loot’ opens at the Ritz Bourse this weekend.

Borrowing it’s title from the classic Biggie tune, ‘Gimme The Loot’ follows two teenagers as they plan a scheme to become the most famous graffiti artists in New York by putting their tag on the infamous Mets' home-run apple.

Director Adam Leon was in town last October during PFF21 to present the film to Festival attendees.

One Week Left To Restore The Roxy On Kickstarter

As of this morning, there is officially one week remaining in our Kickstarter campaign to get the Roxy Theater back to it’s former glory. And thanks to the 395 incredible backers so far, we’ve reached our goal of $40,000.00! With this post, we’d like to extend our most sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to the cause to restore the last remaining independent theater in Center City.

While we here at the Philadelphia Film Society are eternally grateful for the contributions thus far, the proceeds from Kickstarter are only a small portion of what we require to fully restore the Roxy.

Relive PFF21 Gem & Oscar-Nominated Film ‘Silver Linings Playbook’

One of the shining standouts of the 21st Philadelphia Film Festival and of the whole year was David O. Russell’s ‘Silver Linings Playbook’. Set in Philadelphia, last year’s opening night film starring Bradley Cooper, Robert DeNiro, and Jennifer Lawrence follows a bi-polar man who recently gets released from a mental hospital and befriends a mysterious girl with her own baggage who agrees to help him reconcile with his estranged wife. But through a series of events that involves dancing and the Philadelphia Eagles, the pair grows closer together despite all their problems.

‘Broken City’ Screening With Mark Wahlberg

Mark Wahlberg certainly has a busy year ahead of him. He has quite the slate of films coming out and in the pipeline for 2013. There’s ‘Pain & Gain’, ‘2 Guns’, a potential sequel to ‘Ted’, and a brand new ‘Transformers’ movie to start another trilogy for the robots in disguise. However, his first movie of the year, ‘Broken City’, where he co-stars with Russell Crowe, hits theaters on January 18, 3013.

Earlier this week, the Prince Music Theater hosted a screening of the upcoming film ‘Broken City’ featuring an appearance from Wahlberg and director Allen Hughes.

Interview: David Chase, Writer/Director of ‘Not Fade Away’

If you can recall back to PFF21, one film that had toes tapping was ‘Not Fade Away’, the debut feature film from David Chase, the creator of HBO’s acclaimed show ‘The Sopranos’. Following the rise and fall of a young band in the 60s who, like many others, were inspired by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones to start playing instruments with the hope of becoming the next big thing in music.

'The Words' Opens Today!

This weekend, the new movie from the hometown writing/directing team Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal, ‘The Words’, opens in theaters everywhere. Featuring fellow Philly boy Bradley Cooper, as well as Jeremy Irons, Dennis Quaid, Olivia Wilde, Zoe Saldana, Ben Barnes, and J.K. Simmons, the film tells the story of Rory Jansen, a struggling writer who finds fame after passing off a lost manuscript as his own novel and then deals with the consequences of stealing another man’s words.

Well, that’s one story that’s presented in the movie anyway.
