PFF SpringFest – JUPITER’S MOON
JUPITER’S MOON
KORNÉL MUNDRUCZÓ | 2017 | Hungary | Hungarian, English | 128 MIN
Cast: Merab Ninidze, Zsombor Jéger, György Cserhalmi, Móni Balsai
After being near-fatally shot while attempting to cross into Hungary, Syrian refugee Aryan (Zsombor Jéger) is mysteriously graced with the ability to fly in this topical, supernatural thriller. Soon Aryan falls under the influence of a corrupt doctor (Merab Ninidze) who hides the young man from the ruthless authorities while capitalizing on his awe-inspiring abilities. White God director Kornél Mundruczó makes the most of this fantastical premise, working with gifted cinematographer Marcell Rév to imbue Jupiter’s Moon with some of the most breathtaking imagery in recent memory. Yet for all its visual splendor and science fiction elements, the film’s take on Europe’s ongoing refugee crisis remains grounded and potent. Audaciously combining the fantastical and the distressingly relevant, Mundruczó has created a strange, stunning, and uniquely cinematic adventure.
