PFF SpringFest – AMERICAN ANIMALS
AMERICAN ANIMALS
BART LAYTON | 2018 | USA, UK | English | 116 MIN
Cast: Evan Peters, Barry Keoghan, Blake Jenner, Jared Abrahamson
The nail-biting drama American Animals tells the strange-but-true story of four young men who attempted to steal millions of dollars worth of rare books from a Kentucky university in 2004. Led by livewire Warren (Evan Peters) and sensitive artist Spencer (Barry Keoghan), the bumbling crew is driven less by greed than by a desire to break out of a humdrum existence and do something remarkable. While the wannabe criminals’ ineptitude is initially played for deadpan comedic effect, the tension ratchets up as the consequences of their scheme become sickeningly real. Director Bart Layton blurs the line between fiction and fact by bringing the real Warren, Spencer, and crew on screen to comment on how their heist is being dramatized. Wildly entertaining and expertly acted, this true-crime yarn provides a fascinating look at how everyday people end up making very bad decisions.
