BRICK
BRICK
RIAN JOHNSON| USA | 2006 | 110 MIN | R
Like a Dashiell Hammett adaptation transplanted to a contemporary high school, Rian Johnson’s remarkably assured Brick simultaneously revitalizes the detective story and the teen drama. This neo-noir follows teenager Brendan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) as he tries to track down his ex-girlfriend’s killer. His quest leads him down a murky, twisted path, populated by menacing thugs, jaded rich kids, and the high school’s drug kingpin (Lukas Haas), who operates out of his parents’ suburban basement. Johnson’s brilliant script boldly combines teen-speak with highly stylized, hardboiled dialogue straight out of a classic noir. An uncompromisingly original work, Johnson’s auspicious debut feature has rightfully become a modern cult classic.
Cast: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Lukas Haas, Emilie de Ravin, Nora Zehetner
