PFF SpringFest – CLOSE-KNIT
CLOSE-KNIT
NAOKO OGIGAMI | 2017 | Japan | Japanese | 127 MIN
Cast: Tôma Ikuta, Kenta Kiritani, Rin Kakihara, Mimura
Left alone by her negligent mother, 11-year-old Tomo (Rin Kakihara) is taken in by her kind uncle and his live-in girlfriend Rinko (Tôma Ikuta). Tomo is surprised at first to find out that Rinko is transgender, though the two soon form a close bond as Rinko helps the little girl alleviate her anxiety by teaching her to knit. While the trio doesn’t make for the most conventional family unit, Tomo is finally able to find the comfortable homelife she had never known before. With this warm, gentle family drama, Japanese director Naoko Ogigami provides a thoughtful exploration of gender identity, self-acceptance, and what it truly means to make a family.
