COP CAR
JON WATTS | USA | 2015 | 88 MIN | R
Check out the latest adventure of Marvel’s wall-crawler at the Roxy and join us for a look back at Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts’ previous film, the 2015 Sundance hit Cop Car.
When you see Cop Car, a taut cat-and-mouse thriller about two ten-year-old boys joyriding in a stolen police cruiser and the menacing Sheriff desperate to get it back, you understand why Jon Watts was a perfect choice to bring a new, youthful version of Peter Parker to the screen. As both co-writer and director, Watts brings authenticity to the lives of his young protagonists and gets terrific performances out of both child actors. He balances their genuine sense of childhood fun with the palpable danger of Kevin Bacon’s Sheriff Kretzer, giving the prolific star one of his most chilling roles. What begins as a light-hearted coming of age drama quickly morphs into an aggressive chase picture chock full of terrific action and blindsiding twists. Cop Car may be the movie that got Watts his big-time studio gig, but it stands on its own as a great example of smart, heartfelt American independent filmmaking.
