MICHAEL ALMEREYDA | USA | 2015 | 115 MIN | PG-13
In 1961, social psychologist Stanley Milgram embarked on one of the most famous, contentious series of experiments of the 20th century. Milgram tested ordinary humans’ willingness to inflict pain on others when ordered to do so by an authority figure, and his results were often chilling. In this searching, inventive biopic, writer and director Michael Almereyda provides fascinating insight into the obedience study, and explores the ways that Milgram’s controversial notoriety went on to affect his career and personal life.
Cast: Peter Sarsgaard, Winona Ryder, Jim Gaffigan, Taryn Manning
OBEDIENCE TO AUTHORITY: Jonathan D. Moreno leads a post-screening discussion of the historical context and critical response to Stanley Milgram’s study, as well as the function of role playing in these famous experiments.
Jonathan D. Moreno is the David and Lyn Silfen University Professor at the University of Pennsylvania where he is a Penn Integrates Knowledge (PIK) professor. At Penn he is also Professor of Medical Ethics and Health Policy, of History and Sociology of Science, and of Philosophy.
“Despite the story’s freight, the laboratory shocks, and Milgram’s insistent melancholia, Experimenter is a nimble, low-frequency high.” -The New York Times
