PFF SpringFest – LEAVE NO TRACE
LEAVE NO TRACE
DEBRA GRANIK | 2018 | USA | English | 108 MIN
Cast: Ben Foster, Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie, Jeff Kober, Dale Dickey
Eight years after the award-winning Winter’s Bone, director Debra Granik has returned with another powerful depiction of characters living in the margins of society. Young actress Thomasin McKenzie delivers a star-making performance as Tom, a teenager living off the grid with her dad Will (Ben Foster), a veteran struggling with the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder. Living in the woods outside Portland, Oregon, Will attempts to teach his daughter how to fend for herself while avoiding the trappings of civilization. But when the pair’s unconventional lifestyle comes under the scrutiny of the authorities, Tom finds herself torn between her yearning for a stable life and the loyalty she feels towards her loving but deeply troubled father. Amidst its gritty depiction of hardscrabble lives, Leave No Trace offers a humane, sensitive portrayal of the unshakable bond between a father and a daughter.
