UNDINE
Christian Petzold’s lush contemporary fable follows a woman named Undine who becomes consumed with the tale of the mythical water nymph who shares her name.
Winner of the Silver Bear for Best Actress at this year’s Berlin Film Festival, Paula Beer (TRANSIT, PFF27) stars in this romantic drama in the enigmatic and beguiling titular role of Undine. Working as a lecturing historian on Berlin’s urban planning, Undine’s life is turned upside down when her boyfriend suddenly leaves her. Though distraught, she soon meets industrial diver Christoph (Franz Rogowski, Transit), and a star-crossed love affair blossoms. When a shocking tragedy occurs, Undine attempts to keep her head above water as her world steadily collapses around her. She cannot, however, always trust that things are as they seem. As Undine desperately attempts to reconcile fleeting, phantom occurrences and actual reality, she finally realizes what she must do. Swirling with magical realism, UNDINE reteams Beer and Rogowski with revered German director Christian Petzold, who inventively reworks ancient folklore into a beautiful and surreal modern day fairytale.
