WES ANDERSON | USA | 1998 | 93 MIN
Wes Anderson’s critically acclaimed breakthrough is the quirky, touching, and hilarious tale of Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman), an eccentric prep schooler who finds himself competing with his sad-sack mentor (Bill Murray) for the affections of the same woman. The film ushered in a new golden age for Murray, and marked the arrival of yet another talented member of the Coppola clan with Schwartzman, who manages to make bespectacled, precocious Max into one of cinema’s most lovable misfits. It’s also perhaps the perfect encapsulation of Wes Anderson’s delightfully twee sensibility, complete with arch dialogue, retro fashions, and a perfectly curated soundtrack of 60s pop gems.
