PFF SpringFest – WOODPECKERS
WOODPECKERS
JOSÉ MARÍA CABRAL | 2017 | Dominican Republic | Spanish | 107 MIN
Cast: Jean Jean, Judith Rodriguez, Fernando De Jesús Mejía, Ramón Emilio Candelario
This blistering drama takes audiences inside the corrupt and violent world of the notorious Najayo Prison on the outskirts of Santo Domingo. Julián (Jean Jean), a newly arrived inmate, finds himself in the orbit of powerful drug dealer Manaury (Ramón Emilio Candelario). Confined to solitary, Manuary needs Julián to relay messages to his girlfriend Yanelly (Judith Rodriguez), a prisoner at the adjacent women’s jail, via a complex prison sign language called “woodpecking.” Julián and Yanelly forge a strong connection despite their distance and circumstances, but must keep their budding romance a secret from Manaury and his henchmen. Shooting on location in a real prison, director José María Cabral has created a singular blend of gritty authenticity and high-octane pulp storytelling.
