About The Philadelphia Film Society

Formed in 2001 by TLA Entertainment Group, the Philadelphia Film Society (PFS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization known principally for its production of the annual Philadelphia Film Festival, as well as for the presentation of three year-round screening series, frequent sneak preview screenings, and multiple other film events throughout the city.  The Festival is the centerpiece of the PFS’ commitment to the presentation of film as a powerful form of artistic expression and a unique force for promoting the understanding of cultural, social and economic diversity.  Not only does film provide a unique opportunity to explore important cultural, social and economic topics with a diverse audience, resulting in a greater understanding and broader feeling of community amongst filmgoers, but film also provides the ability to teach and understand new ideas, different subjects, and alternative ways of thinking.

Both the Festival and PFS’ other year-round initiatives are designed to further this goal, by engaging and educating the diverse communities of the Greater Philadelphia region.   Often, due to the unfortunate lack of movie theatres within Philadelphia, many important independent films that should be seen by the community do not receive sufficient attention or recognition.  It is the mission of PFS, through the annual festival and through both the filmadelphiaINDEPENDENT and filmadelphiaDOCUMENTARY screening series that extend the festival year-round, to make the film-going community in Philadelphia aware of these films and to provide the opportunity to see these films in a traditional theatre setting.  Similarly, the filmadelphiaCLASSICS screening series returns both groundbreaking and little known classic films to theatres in order to revisit the themes within.  Further, like some of the films screened at the festival, all of the films in the three screening series are followed by moderated discussions, in order to further explore and understand the importance of the ideas behind each film.

Beyond serving as the primary source for visual literacy through film, the festival and related screening series serve as a boon to the city of Philadelphia. The festival screens in several venues located in multiple Philadelphia neighborhoods, from Olde City to University City, Avenue of the Arts to Rittenhouse Square, and has even included screenings outside the city borders in Bryn Mawr, Ambler and Lansdale (Hiway).  Over the course of the festival, tens of thousands of film-lovers from both inside and outside Philadelphia attend screenings, often frequenting local hotels, restaurants and retail establishments.  The festival, as well as the year-round screenings, also draws recognizable talent with the films, acting as an ambassador for Philadelphia by inviting and introducing the city to many of Hollywood’s brightest stars.  Paired with the screenings, the festival also hosts a wide array of parties, VIP receptions and events, supporting and supported by local businesses, all of which truly make the festival into a major film experience.  It is PFS’ intention to continue to grow the festival into an even more desirable destination for film lovers around the world.

It is only through the support of our membership and sponsors that we can sustain and ensure the continued success of both the organization and our programming, including the annual Film Festival.  As such, in addition to thanking each and every member of the Philadelphia Film Society, the Philadelphia Film Society would like to recognize the following foundations & supporters:
