Last night at Movie Monday, PFS was proud to present the screening of RESURRECT DEAD: THE MYSTERY OF THE TOYNBEE TILES to a packed house at the Trocadero.

The crowd was excited and intrigued to watch the film that explores the bizarre phenomenon that is the Toynbee tiles. If you’ve never seen or heard of these tiles do yourself a favor and google it- or better yet watch the film! The documentary follow 3 young men who, through extreme investigation, try to figure out who is this mysterious artist placing these tiles and why he is doing it. The tiles which read: “TOYNBEE IDEA IN MOVIE 2001 RESURRECT DEAD ON PLANET JUPITER” can be seen all over Philadelphia streets and the East Coast. In fact, the documentary theorizes that the artist of these tiles is actually a South Philly native. The locality of this film made the audience connect with it even more. Not only is the film fascinating enough in itself, but the idea of maybe running into this infamous, mysterious artist in your own neighborhood was very exhilarating.

Another exciting moment for the night was when the director Jon Foy took the stage with two of the film’s main subjects, Justin Duerr and Steve Weinik, to answer audience members’ questions. Many had very insightful questions that the trio were more than happy to answer. They talked about how they all met, if they thought they were being too intrusive or disrespectful by making this film, and criticism they’ve received about the ending. Afterward they stuck around the Troc lobby to continue the discussion with audience members. They answered questions, joked around, and sold merchandise such as copies of the DVD, artwork by main subject Justin Duerr, and still photographs of the tiles taken by Steve Weinik.

The conversation continued after the Q&A in the Trocadero lobby!
