Last week Philadelphia welcomed Academy Award winning actress Eva Marie Saint to the Prince Music Theater where she accompanied a special presentation of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic NORTH BY NORTHWEST.
Part of TCM’s “Road to Hollywood” series, 400+ movie lovers, including numerous PFS members, packed the Prince for the free event (200 patrons were turned away from the first-come, first-served screening).
TCM host Ben Mankiewicz facilitated the pre-screening Q&A with Ms. Saint, asking about working with Cary Grant in NORTH BY NORTHWEST and Marlon Brando in ON THE WATERFRONT (the film for which she won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress). The two delighted the audience with their playful banter as they discussed “old Hollywood,” the directorial differences between Alfred Hitchcock and Elia Kazan, and Ms. Saint’s own approach to acting.
After a standing ovation for the special guests, NORTH BY NORTHWEST was shown in all its glory. The cross-country thriller shined on the big screen with legendary scenes of Cary Grant narrowly escaping a crop duster, he and Ms. Saint hanging off the side of Mount Rushmore, not to mention the hustle and bustle of late-1950s New York.
It was a memorable evening for those in attendance, and a real treat to experience the film on the big screen, as it was meant to be seen. Even today, sum 53 years after the initial release, you can’t help but be drawn into this classic film; great movies are indeed timeless.
