The Philadelphia Film Society prides itself on ensuring that its members are the first in Philadelphia to see some of the very best in film – be it through our annual festival (the 21st Annual Philadelphia Film Festival will run October 18-28, 2012) or through our Sneak Preview series that keeps that festival feeling going all year long.
Philadelphia Film Society members have long had bragging rights that they had seen a film first – this couldn’t be more true than in the last year when 14 Academy Awards went to films that PFS had screened for its members BEFORE they hit theaters.
Well… it happened again. PFS Members got to see the HIGH-larious flick HIGH SCHOOL at its East Coast Premiere on Friday, October 15, 2010 as part of the 19th Annual Philadelphia Film Festival ALMOST A YEAR AND A HALF before its theatrical release of June 1, 2012!
HIGH SCHOOL begins at the end of the school year, where, following a pot-related incident at the spelling bee, Principal Gordon (delightfully played by a ginger toupee-wearing Michael Chiklis) forcefully institutes a zero-tolerance drug policy. He mandates immediate drug testing, the failure of which will result in immediate expulsion. Normally, this would be of no consequence to straight-edge valedictorian Henry (Matt Bush, Adventureland), except for the slight detail that he just got stoned for the first time. With his college scholarship hanging in the balance, Henry and his stoner comrade-in-arms Travis (Sean Marquette, 13 Going on 30) hatch a simple plan to beat the drug test: get the entire school high! All they need to do is make some “baked goods” to replace those in the bake sale… and all they need to make them is a few dozen pounds of weed from their friendly neighborhood dealer Psycho Ed (played with reckless abandon to hysterical effect by Academy Award winner Adrian Brody, The Pianist). What could go wrong?
HIGH SCHOOL is the perfect marriage of the coming of age high school film and the stoner comedy – taking tried and true tropes of each genre and bringing them together in wonderfully new ways. If you missed our East Coast Premiere in 2010, now you have a second chance to SEE IT FIRST before it comes out in theaters at our Member Sneak Preview Screening of HIGH SCHOOL on Thursday, May 24, 2012. We hope to see you there!
