It’s the year 3000. Intelligent life in the universe has been discovered, and they’ve taken over the world. Welcome to the world of tomorrow!

Unfortunately, this is not the beginning of Futurama. Instead, it’s the set-up for something unintentionally funny: A small rebel force of humans taking on an entire army of “intelligent” life from the planet Psychlo in the delightfully ridiculous Battlefield: Earth.

I saw it on Cult Weekend at the Uptown Minneapolis Theatre, along with my favorite bad movie The Room, on the last weekend of the month. Now, I’m going to take an unpopular position and say that Rocky Horror is not a good movie like many argue, but is so bad that it’s rather entertaining. When a Saturday Night Live director decides to make a horror film, the finished product is bound to be one-of-a-kind. Now having learned this detail of James Signorelli’s background, I can certainly understand what drove the creation of his ridiculous film Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. I remember forcing my friends to watch it when they came over for slumber parties, and they left the next morning mildly horrified that their friend was a psycho. As I quoted every other line while watching it last weekend, their assumptions were confirmed.

Guilty pleasures are a necessary recourse for any cinephile, no matter what genre or style you gravitate towards. My poison comes in the form of the over-the-top, blood splattering films of the Sushi Typhoon production company. These films barely classify as B-movies, and one of my personal favorites is Mutant Girls Squad. This film is vulgar and has pretty poor production value, but I can’t help but enjoy it just for the pure madness that it has to offer.

With all the hate that The Twilight Saga gets (and rightfully so) for destroying the image of what a vampire is and should be, few realize that vampire movies have always existed outside of household Anne Rice fetish material. While it is tempting to blame the downfall of modern vampires on Stephanie Meyer, a movie came out in the 80s that, if held to the same standards, would be equally as blasphemous in the eyes of many a Hot Topic shopper.
