When Boat Rides Go Awry

August 3, 2021 by Emily Costello

From ill-fated transatlantic cruises to getting amnesia from falling overboard, movie boat rides have a habit of being disastrous. These thrilling yet shocking stories keep us invested in every minute!

Below you’ll find our list of some of the most catastrophic boat rides in film!

TITANIC (1997)
In an epic, action-packed romance, a seventeen-year-old aristocrat, Rose, falls in love with a kind but poor artist, Jack, aboard the luxurious, ill-fated R.M.S. Titanic.

ADRIFT (2018)
A true story of survival, as a young couple’s chance encounter leads them first to love, and then on the adventure of a lifetime as they face one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in recorded history.

JAWS (1975)
When a killer shark unleashes chaos on a beach community, it’s up to a local sheriff, a marine biologist, and an old seafarer to hunt the beast down.

LIFE OF PI (2012)
A young man who survives a disaster at sea is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. While cast away, he forms an unexpected connection with another survivor: a fearsome Bengal tiger.

THE PERFECT STORM (2000)
Based on the true-life best selling novel by Sebastian Junger, the six members of the Andrea Gail, a swordfishing boat, head out to sea for their last trip of the season. Unbeknownst to them, a shockingly brutal storm is slowly gaining steam. Before the National Weather Bureau has a chance to inform the crew of the impending danger, it’s too late.

OVERBOARD (1987)
A wealthy, obnoxious woman hires a carpenter to do some work on her yacht. When she gets amnesia after falling overboard, he decides to introduce her to the life she once mocked by convincing her they’re husband and wife.

IN THE HEART OF THE SEA (2015)
Based on the book by Nathaniel Philbrick, crewmen aboard the New England vessel Essex face a harrowing battle for survival when a whale of mammoth size and strength attacks with force, crippling their ship and leaving them adrift in the ocean.
