Two years prior to the beloved film adaptation, A RAISIN IN THE SUN made Broadway history as the first play written by a black woman, Lorraine Hansberry, and directed by a black man, Lloyd Richards. The film adaptation quickly followed, with a majority of its Broadway cast returning, and introduced moviegoers to one of the most emotionally eye-opening and insightful depictions of contemporary black life committed to the silver screen. Led by a passionate revelatory performance by Sidney Poitier, the film and play are credited for bringing light to redlining and housing discrimination that affected so many minorities in the United States. After the death of the Younger family’s patriarch leaves them with $10,000 in life insurance, grieving widow Lena (Claudia McNeil) and son Walter Lee (Poitier) disagree on what the money should be used for. Though they differ on how to achieve their dreams, Lena and Walter Lee tragically discover the systemic racism and obstacles that permeate the United States institutions and prevent them from any form of success. Though often filled with ugly truths and tragedy, the astonishing actors behind the Younger family bring to life the ups and downs of Hansberry’s coveted play with heart and heartbreak.

Cast: Sidney Poitier, Claudia McNeil, Ruby Dee, Diana Sands
