BUT I’M A CHEERLEADER
JAMIE BABBIT | USA | 1999 | 85 MIN | R | ENGLISH
Jamie Babbit’s satirical Sundance hit is a campy and subversive dollhouse nightmare in the way of John Waters that’s emerged as a sweet, romantic touchstone for early aughts queer cinema. Suburbanite cheerleader Megan (Natasha Lyonne) is shocked to find her straitlaced parents (Bud Cort! and Mink Stole!!), uptight friends, and vanilla boyfriend have staged an intervention with the aid of RuPaul’s ex-gay, conversion therapy camp counselor Mike. Whisked off to True Directions, Megan stumbles through the camp’s patented 5 step program that includes performing stereotypical gender roles and admission of homosexuality. Amidst the absurdity, Megan sparks up a romance with the more assured “camper”, Graham (Clea DuVall), that will challenge the camp’s manifesto and idea that foreplay is only for sissies.
Cast: Natasha Lyonne, Clea DuVall, Michelle Williams, Brandt Wille
