CURE
KIYOSHI KUROSAWA | JAPAN | 1997 | 111 MIN | NR | JAPANESE, SPANISH
Part of the Philadelphia Film Society’s AFTER HOURS series.
One of the first films to ignite the cinematic world’s obsession with the massively influential and iconic stylings of modern J-horror, Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Cure chilled and thrilled like no film before. Kurosawa traded the jump scares and horny “teens” of 80s and 90s slasher films for existential dread and a psychologically terrifying tone. In his first collaboration with Japanese acting legend Kōji Yakusho (13 Assassins, PFF29’s Under the Open Sky), Kurosawa follows no nonsense detective Takabe (Yakusho) on the trail of increasingly peculiar and brutal murders. Each victim is engraved with a large X across their throat while the red-handed murderer is oddly found near the crime scene with no recollection of the crime. Along with his partner, psychologist Sakuma (Tsuyoshi Ujiki), Takabe’s case goes cold until a mysterious man enters the investigation endangering all involved. Cited by Oscar winner Bong Joon-Ho as one of the greatest films of all time, Cure remains an unforgettable hair-raising, icy descent into madness that many would go on to imitate, but never best.
