DEEP RED

DARIO ARGENTO | ITALY | 1975 | 127 MIN | R | 4K | ITALIAN, GERMAN, ENGLISH

Before 1977’s SUSPIRIA, giallo legend Dario Argento had already perfected his patented style of blood drenched lullaby nightmares in 1975’s DEEP RED. The psychedelic game of cat and mouse finds jazz pianist Marcus Daly (Blowup’s David Hemmings) witnessing the brutal murder of a young psychic and inevitably becoming the mysterious black gloved killer’s next target. As he becomes increasingly obsessed with discovering the identity of his children’s song loving and creepy doll collecting tormentor, Marcus endangers himself and all those he comes in contact with leading to a shocking finale. DEEP RED cemented the visionary Argento as an international star with his knack for menacing set pieces and camp while marking the beginning of a renowned collaboration with Italian prog rock band Goblin.

Cast: David Hemmings, Daria Nicolodi, Gabriele Lavia, Macha Méril

Part of the Philadelphia Film Society’s AFTER HOURS series.

Bringing together the odd, eerie, thrilling, and downright weird, this is the home of cult classics.
