DRIVEWAYS
ANDREW AHN | USA | 2019 | 83 MIN | NR
Following up his standout debut Spa Night (PFF25), Andrew Ahn’s sophomore feature is a delicate drama about three lost souls finding solace and companionship in unexpected circumstances. Harried single mom Kathy (Hong Chau, Downsizing) and her introverted son Cody (newcomer Lucas Jaye) travel to a small suburban town to clean out the house of Kathy’s sister, who has recently committed suicide. Though Del (Brian Dennehy), the widowed Korean War vet who lives next door, initially eyes the newcomers with suspicion, he and Cody soon develop a unique friendship. Directed with a sure, subtle hand by Ahn and bolstered by beautiful performances, Driveways finds surprising power and depth in quiet moments of introspection and connection.
