THE BIG LEBOWSKI
JOEL COEN, ETHAN COEN | USA, UK | 1998 | 117 MIN | R | ENGLISH | 7:00 PM
Until the recent reemergence of the espresso martini, the coffee liqueur empire Kahlúa could solely thank Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski’s refined taste for White Russians for staying in business all these years. A man of simple pleasures, The Dude (Jeff Bridges) has become arguably the most singular, unique and fully realized character in Joel and Ethan Coen’s iconic laundry list of oddballs and underachievers. But it all begins with a classic film noir case of mistaken identity that leaves The Dude roughed up with a killed high and a urine stained rug. Encouraged by his bowling buddies, the gun-toting vet Walter (John Goodman) and meek Donny (Steve Buscemi), The Dude confronts the man who ordered the assault in an attempt to mellow the harsh vibes. But like any classic Coen Brothers’ film, things don’t go according to plan. So mind the beverages, try to stay in your element, and remember that The Dude is out there taking it easy for all us sinners. The Dude abides.
Cast: Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi
HOW HIGH
JESSE DYLAN | USA | USA | 93 MIN | R | ENGLISH | 10:00 PM
How High. Is it a question? A dare? A play on a high school name, despite the film taking place on the streets of Harvard University? The world may never know, but with the undeniable chemistry that Wu-Tang members Method Man and Redman bring to this much better, funnier, and, yes, even smarter, than it has any right to be early 2000s comedy, it doesn’t matter. While Silas (Method Man) seems to have a good thing going for him with his homegrown-fitted spice rack, Jamal (Redman) can’t seem to catch a break, still living with his family. But as fate would have it for the two star crossed stoners, Jamal’s piece saves the day for Silas’ very dank — dead friend’s ashes included — weed. As the ghost of the deceased Ivory (underrated Chuck Deezy) aids them in acing their college entrance exams, the two become star freshman at a diversity struggling Ivy League university under the command of the late and great Fred Willard. The two must overcome uptight rowing bros, woke Black History teachers, and even the secret service if they are to learn how to grow the most sacred herb and make it past midterms.
Cast: Method Man, Redman, Obba Babatundé, Mike Epps
