FANNY AND ALEXANDER
INGMAR BERGMAN | SWEDEN, FRANCE, WEST GERMANY | 1982 | 188 MIN | R | SWEDISH, GERMAN, YIDDISH, ENGLISH, FRENCH
No other family in cinema history knows how to deck the halls better than the Ekdahls of Ingmar Berman’s celebrated classic Fanny & Alexander. Following the Swedish family’s annual presentation of the nativity scene, three generations of Ekdahls and their servants descend upon matriarch Helena’s lavish manor for a night of revelry that includes second helpings of drinks, food, and flirtations. Yet for the young and imaginative Alexander spending time at the home of his grandmother means visions of ghosts, or is it Death itself, haunting her extravagant estate. Before the snow even melts, Alexander’s beloved father Oscar suffers a stroke that leaves his mother Emelie in disarray and is quickly remarried to a strict, orthodox bishop. The cold barren home of the bishop proves to be a jail for Alexander and his sister Fanny, but a startling discovery may make it their tomb. Often cited as one of the greatest films of all time, Bergman poured his rarely seen heart into a luscious, magical film about family, youth, dreams, and death that has continued to elate audiences decades later
