GHOST IN THE SHELL
MAMORU OSHII | JAPAN, UK | 1995 | 83 MIN | TV-MA | JAPANESE
Along with 1995’s Akira, Mamoru Oshii’s Ghost in the Shell remains one of the most influential anime films of all time that continues to convert the anime-averse into true believers. Showcasing the immense world building established in the manga, Oshii’s visionary, mature direction brings to life a near future where technology allows the mind and soul to be transported to a new host on a whim. No nonsense cybernetic agent Major Motoko Kusanagi and her trusted partner Batou are on the hunt for an evasive, diplomatic disrupting, hacker named the Puppet Master in 2029 Japan. As they zero in on their target, Kusanagi forges an unusual bond with the enemy that will lead her down a path of self questioning and discovery. A major influence on the Wachowskis’ The Matrix and its sequels, Ghost in the Shell is even more relevant today as we, like Kusanagi, begin to unravel at the thought of identity loss amidst an inevitable metaverse dominated by Zuckerberg and Co.
