Capping off a monumental run of films in 1967 that included IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT and TO SIR, WITH LOVE, Sidney Poitier graced the screen with one of his most beloved films ever, GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER. Released prior to the vital Supreme Court decision of Loving v. Virginia, Dinner presented a microcosm of a transitioning culture throughout the United States. After vacationing in Hawaii, newly in love couple Joey Drayton (Katharine Houghton) and Dr. John Prentice (Poitier) surprises Drayton’s parents with the news of a quick engagement. The shocking plans for matrimony are only exceeded by Joey’s parents’ (Spencer Tracy, Katherine Hepburn) learning that Dr. Prentice is black. What begins as a planned celebration turns to frank discussions, hidden prejudices, and worries about the couple’s complicated future that are exacerbated by the arrival of even more surprise guests. Filled with compassion and love during a time period of civil unrest, DINNER may be light on the surface, but served as a major turning point in Hollywood and beyond.

Cast: Spencer Tracy, Sidney Poitier, Katharine Hepburn, Katharine Houghton
