HOT ROD
AKIVA SCHAFFER | USA | 2007 | 88 MIN | PG-13 | ENGLISH
Over the past 100 years the silver screen has been home to cinema’s larger than life stars. The striking profiles of a swashbuckling Errol Flynn, sultry Lauren Bacall, or adventurous Peter O’Toole have been ingrained into our memories; becoming a cornerstone of our civilization’s pop culture in the process. For years film aficionados searched for the second coming of a film and character that would equally enrapt, thrill, and charm audiences while simultaneously ushering in the next hundred years of cinema. In 2007, Hot Rod was released. Featuring a never-surpassed all-star cast lead by heralded thespians Sissy Spacek, Ian McShane, and Chris Parnell, Hot Rod was an underdog story for the new millenium that cinema needed, but didn’t deserve. The story of “Hot” Rod Kimble (Andy Samberg), a man(child) living in the shadow of his late stuntman father and under the roof of an emotionally and physically abusive stepdad named Frank (McShane) resonated with the handful of people that saw it in theaters. When Frank is diagnosed with an illness that only $50k can cure, Rod steps up with the help of his stunt crew (Bill Hader, Danny McBride, Isla Fisher, Jorma Taccone) to save the old man’s life so that one day Rod can best the curmudgeon in a one-on-one fight. The determined Rod will punch-dance his way through trials and tribulations befit for Odysseus himself before enduring the grand finale: jumping 15 school buses. Directed with absurd panache by Lonely Island member Akiva Schaffer (Popstar: Never Stop Popping), Hot Rod is a comedic triumph and a gift to the world that never stops gifting over a decade later.
Cast: Andy Samberg, Isla Fisher, Ian McShane, Jorma Taccone
