I DO NOT CARE IF WE GO DOWN IN HISTORY AS BARBARIANS
RADU JUDE | ROMANIA | 2018 | 140 MIN | NR | ROMANIAN, W/ ENGLISH SUBS
Winner of the Grand Prix award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, the newest film by celebrated Romanian filmmaker Radu Jude (Scarred Hearts) is an unapologetic, blistering takedown of Romania’s revisionist history concerning its involvement in horrific acts during World War II . Leading the charge is Mariana Marin (exceptional newcomer Ioana Iacob), a headstrong director tasked with creating a live spectacle that celebrates Romania’s past and indulges her government funders. When she isn’t addressing the audience or spending evenings disputing Marxism with her lover (like straight out of a 60s Godard film), Mariana must command a ragtag ensemble of prop-gun-toting non-actors to carry out her controversial recreation of the 1941 Odessa massacre when over 100,000 Ukrainian Jews were murdered. Marian spiritually embodies Jude and his knack for provocative comedy and wit as she verbally spars with and outsmarts those who question her work. Brimming with history, grim humor, and poignant satire that would make Veep creator Armando Iannucci jealous, Barbarians is a crowning achievement for Jude and a new art house masterpiece.
