IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE

WONG KAR WAI | CHINA, HONG KONG | 2000 | 98 MIN | PG | CANTONESE, SHANGHAIESE, FRENCH, SPANISH | 4K

Brimming with emotional restraint and longing, the unrequited love story of neighbors Mr. Chow (Tony Leung) and Mrs. Su (Maggie Cheung) has tearfully captivated audiences for over two decades in Wong Kar-Wai’s modern day masterpiece IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE. The moody, stylish romance is filled with classic scene after classic scene of meticulous period costumes, an emotionally devastating score, and unsurpassed mastery of neo-noir lighting and colors. Set in the British Hong Kong of the 1960s, expatriate journalist Chow rents an apartment from the relentlessly nosy Mrs. Suen (Rebecca Pan) and spends long evenings alone as his never-seen wife works late. Despite chance meetings on the city streets and in the apartment’s cramped hallways, Chow is unaware that his neighbor Su also spends melancholy evenings alone with an absent husband. When the two inevitably strike up a cordial friendship they discover that their respective spouses are having an affair. Thus begins Wong’s quiet yet powerful foray into an increasingly intimate friendship built on mutual grief, but hints at something more. Voted the second best film of the century by critics from around the world in 2016, IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE remains an undisputed cinematic achievement.
