MOONSTRUCK

NORMAN JEWISON | USA | 1987 | 102 MIN | PG | ENGLISH

A few grey strands and oversized 80s coats can’t even hold back the Goddess of Pop herself in Norman Jewison’s reigning cinematic comfort food for all palates, Moonstruck. Bursting with romance, melodrama, and a missing hand, Moonstruck captures the magical, steaming-pothole spirit of New York City during the holidays in a way that only a few films have managed. After accepting a bumbled proposal from her nervous beau Johnny (Danny Aiello), Loretta (Cher) is determined to end a streak of bad luck that ended her last marriage in death. She accepts not only to marry the dweeb, but also to take charge of reconciling Johnny’s relationship with his estranged brother, Ronny. Easier said than done when she discovers, in the basement of her neighborhood bakery, that Johnny’s brother is hot-headed, coal-shoveling, aria-loving, crazy-eyed Nicolas Cage. Under the glow of an absurdly large full moon, the two get lost in a passionate tango of words (among other things) and must determine, before Johnny’s inevitable discovery, if it’s the real deal or if they simply have been…moonstruck.

Cast: Cher, Nicolas Cage, Olympia Dukakis, Danny Aiello
