Dee Rees announced herself as a major new cinematic talent with this coming-of-age drama. Pariah is the story of Alike (Adepero Oduye), a 17-year-old who’s beginning to embrace her identity as a lesbian. Alike’s choices don’t sit well with her harshly critical mother Audrey (Kim Wayans), who pushes her into a friendship with an acquaintance from church, with unexpected consequences. Tough yet tender, Pariah is a moving depiction of self-acceptance and emerging independence.
