PEFF: NOTHING BUT THE SUN
ARAMI ULLÓN | SWITZERLAND, PARAGUAY | AYOREO, SPANISH | 2021 | 75 MIN
Part of Green Screen: Philadelphia Environmental Film Festival
The arid, dusty shacks of Paraguay’s remaining indigenous Ayoreo tribes reflect the gravelly voices found on Mateo Sobode Chiqueno’s old tape cassette recorder. For over 40 years, the Ayoreo man has attempted to archive the alarming stories of deforestation, corrupt missionaries, disease, and violence that engulfed the once undisturbed nation throughout the 20th century. Yet the gravely ill elders of the tribe come to life when they are able to recount the songs and past accounts of lush jungles and peace before colonialism left them with little hope. As Mateo begins to reflect on his life’s work and his own finality, Arami Ullon’s gripping documentary transforms from being a look at the past into a poetic, emotionally stirring foray into what it means to live.
