À L’ABORDAGE
Nothing goes quite as planned when a lovestruck young man decides to pursue the object of his affection to Southern France with his best friend in tow.
On a hot summer night in Paris, young Félix (Éric Nantchouang) meets Alma (Asma Messaoudene), and after a few drunken, passionate hours he thinks he’s found his soulmate. So, when Alma dashes off in the morning to catch a train to the South of France for a family vacation, Félix decides on a whim to follow her. He enlists his reluctant best friend Chérif (Salif Cissé) and the two carpool with uptight mama’s boy Édouard (Édouard Sulpice), who begrudgingly gets tangled up in the adventure. Alma’s reaction to the surprise isn’t what Félix had hoped, but the three young men make the most of the trip nonetheless, forging a unique bond in between bouts of comically inept one-upmanship. Director Guillaume Brac has assembled a diverse cast of young performers, whose real experiences informed Brac and co-writer Catherine Paillé’s screenplay, giving the characters a feel of lived-in authenticity. The resulting film is invigorating and playful, yet deceptively wise about the grand ambitions and subtle disappointments of youth.
