AMMONITE
Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan deliver revelatory performances in this breathtaking 19th Century romance between an isolated paleontologist and a sheltered young wife.
Holed up with her aging mother on the grey, rocky coast of Southwest England, Mary Anning (Winslet) has carved out a reputation for herself as a brilliant, groundbreaking scientist while studiously sublimating her personal desires. Her stony façade begins to crumble when a wealthy young visitor leaves his wife Charlotte (Ronan) with Mary in hopes that a period of rest will lift the young woman from the grief she’s felt since the loss of her child. In this harsh environment and with little to rely upon but one another, the women enter into an intensely passionate affair, yet their tenuous bliss is threatened by the judgments of the outside world and the impending return of Charlotte’s husband. Having caught the attention of filmgoers with his feature debut God’s Own Country in 2017, director Francis Lee returns with a searing story of forbidden love in rural Britain. And already established as two of the finest actresses working today, Winslet and Ronan display new shades to their talents as women struggling to find joy and fulfillment despite the strictures of their time.
