BREAKING SURFACE

JOACHIM HEDÉN | Belgium, Norway, Sweden | Swedish | 2020 | 82 MIN

The strained relationship between two sisters is tested when one is forced to come to the other’s rescue after a diving excursion goes terribly wrong in this survival thriller.

Journeying from Sweden to a remote part of coastal Norway for a reunion with her younger half-sister Tuva (Madeleine Martin), Ida (Moa Gammel) carries some heavy emotional baggage with her. Ida has resented Tuva’s closeness with their mother ever since their parents’ bitter divorce, and a repressed childhood trauma lies even deeper below the surface of their troubled relationship. Professional diver Tuva attempts to coach her less experienced sister through a difficult dive off the rocky coast of Norway, though their testy dynamic threatens to get in the way. But Ida is forced to put aside her resentments and tap into her resourceful side when a freak accident traps Tuva deep underwater with a finite and rapidly decreasing supply of oxygen keeping her alive. As the clock ticks, Ida is forced to overcome deadly obstacles in order to save her sister. Taking full advantage of his forbiddingly beautiful setting and a ruthlessly suspenseful premise sure to keep viewers locked in suspense from beginning to end, director Joachim Hedén ups the ante by layering in a nuanced and genuinely moving exploration of the complicated bonds between sisters.

CAST: Moa Gammel, Madeleine Martin, Trine Wiggen, Jitse Jonathan Buitnik
