COME TRUE
A troubled young woman joins a mysterious sleep study but gets much more than she signed up for in this dreamy, insidiously creepy sci-fi thriller.
After running away from home, 18-year-old Sarah (Julia Sarah Stone) decides to sign up for a university sleep study, both to have a reliable place to sleep at night, and as a potential remedy to her disturbing nightmares. Run by a ragtag group of 20-something assistants, the study requires patients to sleep wearing high-tech brainwave-monitoring devices. But exactly what’s being studied, the lab technicians won’t reveal. When her disturbing dreams begin to creep into her waking life, Sarah begins to suspect that something truly sinister is happening to her and the other subjects while they sleep. Writer-director Anthony Scott Burns creates an immersive audiovisual landscape, conjuring otherworldly horror in surreal nightmare sequences and effectively evoking a feeling of eerie dread even in Sarah’s waking moments. Essential to the film’s atmosphere is its memorable, 80s-inspired score, which Burns co-wrote (under the pseudonym Pilotpriest) with synthpop duo Electric Youth. Conjuring the spirit of fellow Canadian David Cronenberg and 80s classics like The Terminator, COME TRUE delivers its own unique brand of sci-fi scares, marking Burns as a major talent to watch.
