In this spellbinding drama, an off-the-grid California marijuana farmer approaching her twilight years faces a threat to her livelihood after the drug’s legalization.
Hailing from a time when “farm-to-table” and utopian ideals were more than just marketing gimmicks, illicit marijuana grower and hippie holdout Devi (Krisha Fairchild, PFF24’s KRISHA) faces an uncertain future when California makes cannabis legal. Besides a few seasonal hemp trimmers, Devi has lived alone on her farm finding tranquility in solitude and comfort in her routine deserted canyon “drug deals”. Though she has amassed piles of unpaid fines for her vocation, it isn’t until big corporations start to move in that the threat of closure becomes very real. Devi’s financial insecurity makes her a vulnerable target for a new generation of growers, like her young, entrepreneurial-minded hemp trimmer Josh (Frank Mosley). As Devi reminisces about an idyllic past filled with counterculture staples and flashbacks, she is unable to see the very real danger that lies in her future. A heartrending character study beautifully brought to life by Fairchild, FREELAND creates another world through its dreamlike yet ominous soundtrack and visuals.
