GET THE HELL OUT
Blending gore-splattered action and barbed satirical comedy, this delightful zombie film follows what happens when a plague turns Taiwan’s lawmakers into bloodthirsty monsters.
After getting kicked out of parliament for engaging in fisticuffs, ambitious legislator Hsiung (Megan Lai) convinces love-struck, nosebleed-prone security guard Wang (Bruce Ho) to run for office and fight for Hsiung’s environmentalist agenda in her place. But Wang is also susceptible to the wiles of Hsiung’s nemesis, a crooked, flashy MP bent on development. This ideological battle soon turns into a literal bloodbath when a deadly plague called “idiot rabies,” which causes victims to turn into bloodthirsty, braindead zombies, starts infecting members of parliament. Locked inside the building, Hsiung and Wang must battle their way out of the melee with their lives intact. From first-time feature director Wang I-Fan, GET THE HELL OUT is a giddy, postmodern thrill ride that draws as much from the language of cartoons and arcade games as from the rich cinematic legacy of zombie thrillers and action flicks. Spoofing the Taiwanese tendency for parliamentary debates to turn into physical fights, the film is a knowing, funny, and shockingly astute parody of government corruption gone haywire, perfectly attuned to our chaotic, pandemic-afflicted times.
