Derek DelGaudio’s IN & OF ITSELF
Derek DelGaudio’s beloved Off-Broadway show gets a stunning cinematic treatment in this poignant, awe-inspiring performance film.
Over the course of 552 performances at a small venue in New York City, Derek DelGaudio entranced theatergoers with his one-man show, In & Of Itself. An expert illusionist and skilled storyteller, DelGaudio crafted an unclassifiable blend of visual spectacle, personal memoir, and eye-opening immersive experience. Now, viewers who didn’t have a chance to see the show can enjoy DelGaudio’s one-of-a-kind vision. Veteran director Frank Oz (LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS) recorded several performances and inventively pieced the footage together, adding extra insight into the ways each one of DelGaudio’s performances informed the next. At the beginning of each event, audience members select roles for themselves (from “Ophthalmologist” to “Masochist”), and throughout the show, DelGaudio encourages them to reflect upon the nature of identity. His profound, sometimes destabilizing insights are interspersed with remarkably intimate autobiographical stories and, of course, mind-boggling feats of illusion that beautifully illustrate DelGaudio’s observations. Mystical, emotional, and unexpectedly perspective-shifting, IN & OF ITSELF is unlike any performance film you’ve seen before.
