KUBRICK BY KUBRICK
Rare, recently recovered interviews with elusive cinema maestro Stanley Kubrick form the backbone of this rousing tribute to one of cinema’s greatest innovators.
Few filmmakers are either as beloved or persistently confounding as Stanley Kubrick. Notorious for inciting fear and bewilderment in audiences and cast members alike with his obsession for detail and quest for perfection, Kubrick’s famous reluctance to participate in discussions about his work only added to his growing mythos. Using decades-spanning, unheard discussions between Kubrick and renowned French film critic Michel Ciment, KUBRICK BY KUBRICK offers a captivating window into the auteur’s mind while finding connective biographical tidbits within the ultra-violence of A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, the psychedelic voyage of 2001, and the psychological terror of THE SHINING. The affable and charming voice of Kubrick, with its lingering hints of a Bronx accent, is a fascinating juxtaposition to the hundreds of black and white images of him on-set in deep, intimidating concentration. Director Gregory Monro recreates some of the visionary director’s most iconic sets to aid in transporting the viewer to Kubrick’s cinematic worlds. The film creates a humanizing portrait of the complicated, determined man who once infamously demanded 127 takes from Shelly Duval; and it’s safe to say after KUBRICK BY KUBRICK, he would have kept going.
