LA LEYENDA NEGRA
A Salvadoran teenager on the brink of being undocumented struggles to keep advocating for her right to stay in America.
In this striking debut feature from filmmaker Patricia Vidal Delgado, newcomer Monica Betancourt gives a raw, honest performance as Aleteia, a Compton teen attempting to balance work, school, and political activism. Aleteia immigrated to the USA from El Salvador as a child, and her safety under Temporary Protected Status (as well as her impending enrollment at UCLA) is in jeopardy. Armed with a tough exterior and an outspoken view on social justice, Aleteia makes waves as a transfer at a new high school. When Rosarito (Kailei Lopez), a popular and beautiful classmate, takes an interest in her, Aleteia is apprehensive to let her guard down. But as the two girls spend more time together, an unexpected and emotional connection begins to form. Highly intimate and moving, LA LEYENDA NEGRA is an all-too-timely portrait that illuminates the realities facing thousands of immigrants whose very lives are at stake amid the current political landscape.
