MIRACLE FISHING
Director Miles Hargrove revisits the events surrounding the kidnapping of his humanitarian father by Colombian guerillas, vividly captured in home video recordings.
Home movies are typically associated with candid moments filled with nostalgia and love, but not for the Hargrove family. After years travelling the world fulfilling humanitarian needs, in the 1990s, the clan settled in Colombia, an embattled country notorious at the time for violence and crime. When patriarch Tom Hargrove was kidnapped during a routine checkpoint by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia—People’s Army, it began an anguished, uncertain year, as the family waged a fraught battle against an unseen but demanding enemy. An aspiring young filmmaker at the time, Miles Hargrove found purpose in recording the thousands of hours during which his family engaged in tense negotiations while attempting to retain some semblance of normalcy. Told exclusively through raw home movie footage that lends itself to the relentless immediacy of the Hargrove family’s nightmare, MIRACLE FISHING is at once a suspenseful thriller and a document of a family’s love and determination.
