From director Sam Pollard (SAMMY DAVIS JR.: I’VE GOTTA BE ME, PFF26), MLK/FBI offers a staggering new chapter in our understanding of the civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr. By way of newly declassified documents, this absorbing documentary exposes the shocking extent to which J. Edgar Hoover utilized the FBI for the constant surveillance and harassment of King. Juxtaposing the now-revered legacy of King, the exploration of this moment in history serves as a necessary reminder that America’s government and citizens once greatly feared King’s radical ideas of equality and forms of protest. Several different interviews contribute to the understanding of this critical and controversial time, including the perspectives of two of King’s colleagues, Andrew Young and Clarence Jones. MLK/FBI not only reveals the dark underbelly of the FBI and J. Edgar Hoover’s crusade against King, but also works to give us a more human insight into this seminal, complicated, leader.
