THE SALT OF TEARS
A young lothario romances several women as he seeks purpose and the acceptance of his father in Philippe Garrel’s exquisitely crafted black and white ode to young love.
Celebrated auteur Philippe Garrel (IN THE SHADOW OF WOMEN, PFF24) returns to his favored themes of youthful passion and heartbreak, capturing Parisian streets and sweeping French countryside in stunning black and white cinematography in this incisive Berlinale competition film. After arriving in Paris, handsome Luc (Logann Antuofermo, in an excellent first screen performance) takes the city’s romantic reputation to heart and ignites a spark with the initially reluctant Djmellia (Oulaya Amamra). Furtive glances and mumbled lines quickly lead to cafés and shared espresso. Their long embraces along the cobblestoned streets are cut short when Luc must return to his aging father’s country home, where an old flame from his past awaits. THE SALT OF TEARS may echo Garrel’s past explorations of enchanting yet fleeting love, but Garrel lands upon a deeper, more rueful look at a time in life when the world revolves around a first kiss and an uncertain morning after.
