STRIDING INTO THE WIND
An aimless film school student goes on an ambling road trip across China in a rickety old Jeep in this charming, deeply personal road movie.
Stuck in a series of unfulfilling jobs and bored in his final year of film school, free-spirited young sound recordist Kun (Zhou You) is fed up and desperate for something more. Putting his recently acquired driver’s license to use, Kun picks up the cheapest car he can find—a beat-up, second hand Jeep Cherokee—and hits the road. With his best friend in tow, he takes up with a student production that leads him onto a road trip across the diverse landscapes of China. What follows is a journey of self-discovery, full of joy and disappointment, disasters and unexpected insights. STRIDING INTO THE WIND is at once a timeless portrait of youthful wandering and a vividly detailed snapshot of China at a particular moment in time. With this debut feature based partly on his own experiences, young filmmaker Wei Shujun marks his place as one of contemporary Chinese cinema’s most promising and exciting new voices.
